with the help of the duergar’s map and uzo’s native familiarity with the area, you were able to avoid any further femorian confrontation and find a weathered and forgotten entrance beneath the tor. undisturbed for years, ancient dust and mold filled your lungs, but you stifled the cough as you descended into this cave within a cave.
it wasn’t long before you were halted by the scratching sound of of something living in the ruins and as you waited in silence, you caught sight of old but familiar enemy.
the fight, while swift, served as a sobering reminder of kenku ingenuity and you found yourself counting blessings as you finished the second gelatinous cube, harmlessly trapped in a pit but very obviously well fed. as you scoured the tiny shrine at the end of the cavern, it became quickly apparent that any valuables had long since been looted or destroyed, so you continued your descent.
as you cleared a second doorway, the suffocating dust seemed to thin as the finished stone stairway gave way to a much larger cavern. bioluminescent fungi coated the walls and ceiling of this cool, moist chamber, and tiny mushrooms and other fungal formations carpeted the detritus of barrels, crates, and shelves littering the corners. wicking from the walls, slimy water formed silent tributaries that pooled in the chamber’s center.
cautiously, you filled the room but it was raktess who held up the sign to stop as his eyes locked on to a particularly large mushroom across the cavern; who then locked eyes back. frozen, you collectively considered the rest of the room, unsure how much of it was actually living until a giant, waxy vine shot from beneath the surface and ensnared nowhere.
as you battled the unseen flora beneath the water, several myconids joined the fray as guard to the hulking sovereign that tore free from the back wall. one by one they dropped, but it was the sovereign’s death that resulted in a explosive cloud, fine as soot, that carpeted the party.
though a clever and effective way to repopulate, you couldn’t help worry what kind of lasting effects breathing and being blanketed with myconid’s spors might cause. the chamber was searched and this time, a small stone alcove was found in one of the adjoining caves. upon prying the cover-stone free, a small, unlocked iron chest was removed and opened to find a 57 gold and nondescript leather belt that ming was able to identify.
sadly, no trace residuum was found and a premature return to the surface still put the unfamiliar and unfriendly shallows of the feydark between you and your home.
